“Fictions and preconceptions already structure what we experience as reality.

Objectivity and manipulation are certainly things that interest me.

And, in the middle, language and context, perception.

My clumsy and incessant search is to spark an emotional glimpse of the eternal.”

Working at the intersection of photography and video, documentary and conceptual art, Hein is a prolific creator keen for captivating explorations in visual ideas and storytelling. His work uses a range of digital and analog media to explore the aesthetics of online consumption and performance, challenges conventional perceptions and invites viewers into a realm where doubt and ambiguity reign.

With the publication of the book "Clouds and Bombs," Hein introduced a mesmerising juxtaposition of appropriated and intervened digital images from the internet, blurring the boundaries between their reference and significant, clouds or bombs, but also of the source and authorship, original and copy. This project prompts introspection, compelling observers to question their interpretations of visual cues and societal symbols.

Venturing beyond ambiguity, Hein embarks in these days on a new journey through a hybrid documentary film centered on the lives of a group of gauchos in Argentina, that at the same time are descendants of Danish immigrants, just like Hein is. This compelling endeavour signifies a shift towards exploring the intricate tapestry of cultural and personal identity, weaving together narratives that traverse borders and generations, and functioning as an intimate mirror of his own life.

Hein's artistic ethos resides in the fusion of critical inquiry and creativity, crafting visual narratives that challenge norms and invite for contemplation. His diverse work reflects an insatiable curiosity about the world and how we mediate it, a commitment to unraveling multifaceted stories, and a dedication to stimulating profound reflections through and about these visual mediums.

Juan Hein was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1971. Since 2006, lives and works in Copenhagen.
