Artist Statement

The series was conceived as a reflexion about the action of nature in contrast to the one by human beings. The images have no contextual reference and invite the viewer to confront them, reflect and try to deduce what is being looked. The technique was based on using the cloud (internet) as the real or the source of the real to find the fundamental image, by traveling without moving, then to re-photograph that image from the screen of the computer and then manipulate them digitally by cropping and reframing them, turning them to monochrome, taking out and adding visual elements to them (as lines, curves, smoke/fog/air effect), cleaning backgrounds and emphasizing the pixel-presence in the image.

The goal was to arrive to a homogenous group of photographic images (and to reflect about what “a photographic image” could mean today), extremely manipulated and re-interpreted by the different successive electronic steps, and then print them in a way and on a kind of paper that, through the view-experience, would refer to an old archival photograph or an etching drawing perception, both in the book and as an individual artwork. The project was inspired by the question: What if a fascinating cloud that I am looking at is actually the result of a bomb explosion?

It is re-photography, appropriation, intervention, manipulation, extended photography. It is an archival poetic project without being referential and explicit and appealing to the documentarian essence of the photographic medium. It is a project about our perception of the real and a reflection about the Sublime, how the force of nature is beyond human control and it ultimately manifests it on our own limited existence, and about the Anthropocene, how the human being has centered all nature around its own existence and exploded it without contemplating the consequences.

All the images in this series, paradoxically, are belonging to actions from nature and none of them are belonging to any bomb explosion created by humans, even though their very close apparently similarity.
